Eoghan Moore #TeamRenewables

In this #TeamRenewables, we speak to Eoghan Moore, Graduate Wind Turbine Technician in the UK&I. 

As part of his Renewable Energy Engineering degree, Eoghan has been learning on the job working alongside our experienced Wind O&M team in Northern Ireland. Alongside this, Eoghan’s passion for drones and his local community, where he volunteers with the Irish Coast Guard, brings another skill set to our already talented workforce.

Career journey so far… 

I started at RES in June 2022, aged 19, on a 12-month professional development placement from Ulster University where I am studying Renewable Energy Engineering. As part of the placement, I am primarily based in Northern Ireland, working as part of RES’ Onshore Wind Operations and Maintenance (O&M) team as a technician. Prior to RES, I had little experience in the wind industry but have since progressed into the role of Competent Technician, completing semi-annual and annual maintenance. I also help to resolve turbine faults to ensure maximum production for each site and reduce asset downtime. 

What are you most proud of at RES? 

After my initial 12-month placement I was fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity to continue with RES until the start of my final year at university. 

The Role 

My role as a turbine technician consists of supporting the day-to-day delivery of turbine services as well as major component replacement projects. A typical day at RES for me usually starts at 8:30am with a daily meeting with my line manager and colleagues where we will reflect on the previous day’s work alongside focussing on the work priorities for the day ahead. After this, we usually head to a site where we’ll, resolve faults, or work on a semi-annual or annual service on a turbine to ensure maximum output from each site. 

I have really enjoyed my time with RES so far, from working at height and having the unique opportunity to see the local landscapes from on top of a turbine (not many people get to say or see that) to the satisfaction of resolving faults and issues on a daily basis.  

Everyone has been extremely helpful and supportive throughout the year with a special mention to my mentor Kevin, whose guidance and time have been invaluable. 

Where do you see your career in five years’ time? 

It’s hard to know what will happen over the next five years once I’m fully qualified as a Renewable Energy Engineer and it is still quite early in my career. I hope to stay within the wind industry and I am interested in finding out more about careers in the development of wind turbines and how I could contribute to the design of their size, output and aerodynamics. 

I also enjoy flying drones and have completed my drone licences in full which would be useful for a career on turbine inspections in the future. 

Tell us about your favourite hobbies and interests 

I am a member of the Irish Coast Guard at my local unit in Downings, Co. Donegal. We are one of a select few stations in the country that cover the four aspects of boat, cliff, search and drone which keeps me busy! I enjoy the satisfaction of helping people who are in need and the benefit it brings to the local community. I enjoy flying the drone and I am one of four drone pilots within the unit. I hope to progress from Crew to Deputy Coxain, and then finally Coxain (the Coxain has the overall responsibility of the boat particularly at the helm and is assisted by the Deputy Coxain or boat navigator along with the crew). 

I am also a keen cyclist and runner. I race regularly, competing in some large races such as the Mayo Ultra 300km solo and the Donegal Ultra 555 as a four-person team where we finished 3rd in 2022. Hopefully, this year we can go two steps further and lift the trophy at the end of 555 gruelling kilometres. 

I have a strong passion for motorsport and Irish rallying, I do some navigating and I am currently 2nd in the Class 7 Northern Ireland Rally Championship. I also enjoy traveling and have attended shows such as the Paris Auto Show in October and Boot, a water sport trade show, in Düsseldorf in January.
