Glasgow’s renewables experts have world at their fingertips as cutting-edge control room unveiled

— RES unveils £400k upgrade, providing 24/7/365 monitoring for assets across the planet —

Scotland’s energy expertise will influence the management of wind, solar, battery storage and offshore grid technology across the world as renewable energy giant RES opens its cutting-edge renewable control centre in Glasgow.

From Neilston near Glasgow to Murra Wurra in Australia, more than 150 renewable energy developments across the world – around 2.5GW of capacity – will now be monitored from the state-of-the-art control room at RES’ offices in Scotland, which reside within STV’s building next to the River Clyde. This is expected to rise to 4GW by the end of 2021.

The world’s largest independent renewable energy company spent two years planning the £400,000 redesign, of which six months was spent studying control rooms from the energy industry for best practice.

And while managing energy generated by the weather, the site uses cloud technology to enable remote and on-site access to crucial monitoring and control info – key to enabling smooth operations in a post-COVID reality.

Charles McLuckie, Control Centre Manager at RES, said: “RES and Scotland have decades of experience in renewable energy and it’s a proud moment that the expertise honed in Glasgow over this time is now being exported across the world 24/7/365.

“With approximately 5,000 calls per month to handle at the centre from right across our international assetsgetting the design and layout right was absolutely key to ensuring our projects continue operating safely day and night.

With significant investment and research, the control centre is thought to be the most advanced of its kind, embracing a host of upgrades to improve functionality, flexibility and the employee experience.

The new control room moves RES away from a gallery-style suite dominated by one large screen, transitioning to a series of individual hubs complete with overhead monitors and breakout areas – at the same time offering more individual focus with greater flexibility for collaboration.

Space is provided for the team to get away from their desks, with flexible areas making for a more comfortable environment, improving staff welfare and ensuring they can still keep an eye on what’s going on.

The redesign also allows for more staff to be on shift at any one time, from a maximum of three people in the old design, up to eight.

Charles added: “The feedback from those who have used the room so far is great – everyone is enjoying the enhanced functionality, logistical layout and the ability to more effectively monitor a greater number of projects.”

The control centre is the hub for global monitoring and offers five key services:

  • Monitoring and escalation
  • Work control
  • Site access
  • Emergency response
  • Grid related services

Additional capabilities will also be added as RES continues to grow alongside a booming renewables industry.

Steve HigmanHead of Operational Performance at RES said“The energy transition is now in full swing and we approached the design of our control room with this in mind. It had to be cutting edge to cope with the demands of today and the possibilities of tomorrow.
