How RES is Making Renewables Reliable: Powering Energy Security During the Transition

by RES | Nov 29, 2024 | Reading time: 2 min

The renewable energy transition presents a challenge: how do we ensure energy security while integrating intermittent power sources into the grid? At RES, our grid experts lead the way with innovative solutions and decades of experience to ensure reliable and secure energy systems.

Leveraging unparalleled expertise and a proven track record in Australia and across the globe, RES excels in delivering exceptional grid connection and registration services for large-scale energy projects. By combining cutting-edge in-house modelling capabilities and deep collaboration with industry stakeholders, RES has successfully overseen the grid connection and registration of over 1.3GW of energy projects.

Key to this success is RES’ commitment to innovation and expertise. Our industry-leading grid connections team doesn’t rely on external consultants—we’ve built unparalleled capabilities in-house. From a state-of-the-art Grid Model that forecasts Marginal Loss Factors (MLF) and congestion to the development of bespoke technical solutions for complex challenges, RES ensures that every project is optimised to end our customers’ needs for long-term grid performance.

Case study: Setting new standards for connection – Templers BESS, SA

RES resolved the control settings, undertook all modelling and progressed all phases of the connection application and registration for Templers Battery Energy Storage System, overcoming unique challenges through collaboration with Sungrow, ElectraNet, and AEMO. By leveraging RES’ technical expertise and strategic coordination, the Templers project resolved its Generator Performance Standards (GPS) and secured NER 5.3.4 approval in record time in ElectraNet’s network.

Case study: Enhancing network security – Australian Wind Farm

As one of the largest generators to connect to a distribution network in the region, this wind farm faced intense scrutiny and competition for network capacity with other generators nearby. Collaborating with a leading turbine supplier, the wind farm was codesigned to deliver enhanced reactive power absorption, effectively addressing over-voltage challenges in the area.

To manage diverse harmonic network impedances, a custom-designed harmonic filter was implemented, ensuring compliance and mitigating operational risks. Close coordination with key stakeholders, including network operators and market bodies, facilitated a smooth Full Impact Assessment (FIA), avoiding delays and ensuring the project’s success.

This case highlights expertise in connecting advanced wind turbine technology in partnership with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
