Significant milestone reached for the Origin x RES joint venture with the Australian Government awarding a feasibility licence to the Navigator North project in Victoria’s Gippsland declared offshore wind area.

The Navigator North project is strategically located approximately 34 km off the Southern Australian coast. Encompassing an area of 700 km2, it boasts immense potential to contribute 1.5 GW of total installed capacity to the Australian National Electricity Market (NEM). This equates to enough electricity to power close to 1 million homes.

The Origin x RES joint venture (JV) brings unrivalled expertise and capability to the Australian market at a time when the country is looking to accelerate development of renewable energy to meet its decarbonisation goals, starting with the highly prospective Gippsland offshore wind area.

Matt Rebbeck, RES’ CEO in Australia commented: “We are excited by this announcement of a feasibility licence for the Navigator North project in Gippsland, and the further opportunities emerging throughout the country. There is so much potential to develop an environmentally sensitive offshore wind industry in Australia that plays a meaningful role in addressing the climate crisis, complimenting the already established and successful onshore wind industry.”

RES has extensive experience having supported the development of over 2.2GW of offshore projects globally and over 5GW onshore projects in Australia. As a pioneer within the offshore wind industry since its inception in the 1990s, RES’ offshore wind portfolio includes significant projects such as East Anglia One, Lynn and Inner Dowsing, Racebank and Lincs in the UK and St Brieuc in France.

RES was involved in the early floating offshore industry through the Dounreay Tri floating offshore project and provides O&M services to the offshore industry.
